2nd Skin: Imaginative Designs in Digital & Analog Clothing

2nd Skin: Imaginative Designs in Digital & Analog Clothing
Follow the human imagination into the 21st century with a fashion show of wearable art that also offers demonstrations of the latest trends in heated clothes, electroluminescent wire, soft circuitry, and green innovations. Artworks include Hannah Perner-Wilson and Mika Satomi's Massage me, an interactive wearable computer that allows users to play a video game and massage a friend at the same time; Takehito Etani's Masticator, headgear that gives audio-visual chewing feedback; and Yu-Shin 'Mue' Kim's fantastic knitwear, which pushes the boundaries between clothing and sculpture. In addition, local artist Sha Sha Higby will perform her exquisite and ephemeral body sculpture involving wood, silk, paper, ceramics, and gold leaf.

AND FROM THE CREAM.............
Cocoon [Collection]
cocoon /kəˈkun/ [kuh-koon] : to envelop or surround protectively; any encompassingly protective or hermetic wrapping or enclosure; insulate, cushion, encase, envelop, pad, swaddle, swathe, wrap

Garments by Scatha G. Allison for miss velvet cream
Headpieces by Esther Allison for ESTAR

In musing on the ideas of skin, the most immediate was the sensation of both protection and of the first point of contact. This duality led me to ideas of texture, translucency, armoring, firmness and ease, tension and release, elasticity and sensitivity. Camouflage and responsiveness, sensation and experience. The form of organic pods, natural elements led back ins the shape of a cocoon to protection. In the fundamental shape and form of the cocoon, translated into fabric and form, each piece will be informed and an expression of the qualities and ideas of skin and covering
For the second skin project, Esther Allison will create a collection of headwear complementing miss velvet cream’s designs. Central to the theme of the collection will be the idea of a cocoon. The pieces will envelop and nurture the head, within which our mental and psychic transformations occur.

BE THERE!!!
Title: 2nd Skin: Imaginative Designs in Digital & Analog Clothing

AND IT MY PLEASURE AND DELIGHT TO PRESENT YOU WITH...............
Estar burst into being in 1997, when artist and designer Esther Allison first recycled her father’s old track suit into a new and improved skirt and jacket suit. Estar creates clothing and accessories with the individual in mind: each one is different, and compliments its wearer’s uniqueness.
Esther Allison : 2008

GET INVOLVED!
Everyone is encouraged to loan their personal creations to the Exploratorium for a temporary community sculpture: Loaned clothing will be hung from the museum rafters and remain suspended for three months. Get details on contributing wearable art to this Clothesline Project at (415) 561-0361.

hazah! it's time to celebrate! the grant holiday trunk wednesday night.......

oh, i realized yesterday. literally. miss velvet cream is now a licenced business in SF. and i have a bank account that was confusing the teller as he thought my name was velvet cream....hmmmmm..... and it's been 1 YEAR!!!! since the opening of the showroom in suite 205 of the grant. it started with just myself and domini, but has grown to include the lovely bad unkl sista and now, on a monthly basis, a collection of the best of the best indie designers we can find to provide an exclusive boutique of fresh gear and fabulousness delivered with smiles and sparkles......
and at the same time i am delighted, to celebrate the ending of a tumultous year for myself. it's been amazing to be in a choke hold by the universe with her sweet smiling radiance and toffee-breath in my face murmuring "do you give in? are you ready to surrender?" and yes, my new year resolution was less fire, more grace. and grace is ultimately surrender, letting go, and leaning into it. [unfold in a generous way. it's not meant to be a strife, it's not meant to be a sturggle up here.] and now in the darkest of nights, we are moving forward again into the light. come toast to the darkness and the understanding that one cannot exist without the other. forever.
and i'd also like to say, i am so PROUD! to have my partners in magical making and general debauchery on the grant 2nd floor: svannah, domini, stazl and fkir and somedays too comma and jonathan join in the mayhem plus other roving guests and pleasure hogs..... it wouldn't be the grant without any of you, thank you!

your spirit lives forever

your spirit lives forever
but i will much miss your magic hands
in this world
making things of such beauty and raw vision
like lightning you leave a crack across my sky
and burnt into my heart
i know you now you travel in your true form
a being of pure lifeforce
and i am honored to have been in your life
and have you in mine
for however fleeting
forever you will inspire me
everytime i sit to sew
and the raven's shadow passes in front of the sun
for that moment, remembering

much respect and so much love to all your heart family
i mourn your passing
